    Through a long, slow process of evolution. The various Christian beliefs adapted to their environments – the existing belief systems of various believers and potential believers – and the "Jesus" thing had some adaptive advantage. I suspect it was largely because we like personal stories, and "Jesus" put a human face to "God".
